Things To Do

School Groups

Looking for ideas for you school trips? We have a wide variety of things on offer for children at Foundation Phase through to Key Stages 3 & 4.

As well as serving as an historic home for centuries worth of history, art and memorabilia, we have a great deal to offer our young visitors who can explore Victorian history through play.

They'll learn about Victorian inventors, popular pastimes and the science of moving pictures in our Inventions & Amusements interactive galleries.

Ground Floor

Art & History

Our ground floor hosts the majority of our Art and History. Tours delve into Welsh Art of special interest and free games, quizzes and an tour from Mrs Humphreys - the resident Housemaid - who you may be able to spot as you walk through the castle.

'Look out for signs of the foxes trail as you tour the house. Ask a friend if you’re stuck'

First Floor

Games & Inventions

As well as featuring the Master Bedroom and Lowther College Room you can find a number of activities perfect for families and school groups. Dress-up in Victorian fashion, try your hand at games, puzzles and illusions popular among the Castle's early residents, and discover the inventions and early motion picture technology developed during the Victorian Era

'Unique Victorian pastimes await so be sure to pose like a painter, balance the iron nails and walk the Hall of Mirrors.'

For History Tours and talks we have our 'From Civilian to Combatant'  Exhibition set over three galleries.

Victorian Gardens & Kinmel Camp

The Trenches Experience at Bodelwyddan is an exciting, ongoing experience and the educational aspects can be adapted for all ages and abilities.

We will engage an experienced local WW1 Educational Interpreter, so your pupils really get the chance to 'Meet Tommy' or 'Nurse Dora' . We encourage questions, photographs and interaction! The experience will be tailored to your requirements, with talks, drill and a tour, plus your pupils will have the opportunity to handle original artefacts from WW1.

Past the Aviary and the Giant Chess Board and Four in a Row you will find our extensive gardens and woodland. The carefully sculpted gardens host a private pond, pine maze and wisteria archway which will take you past the garden wall and into our woodland walk. Keep an eye out for mini beasts and squirrels, begin the hunt for the toughest conker and be sure to explore the reproduction practice trenches of Kinmel Camp next to the Adventure Playground and uncover the history of its role in the First World War.

Make the most of good weather at the Adventure Playground. It's the perfect spot to take a break from exploring the grounds, with sweeping views over the area, a jungle gym for children and a maze just a stone's throw away.

Complete your day out at Bodelwyddan with a visit to our onsite Gift Shop for a souvenir. We stock a variety of items, many at 'child friendly' prices !
